Welcome to the Down Under Native Orchids 2009 Website. We
would like to extend our thanks to all our clients who have responded so
vigorously to our 2009 catalogue, as a result we have quite a number of
alterations AND
ADDITIONS. We have included what FLASKS we have available and are in
THE DOCKRILLIA HYBRIDS AND OTHER GENERA, in
addition to more divisions in some of the categories. Thank
you once again and we look forward to your continued support. Phena
& Brian The
site has been updated with the 2009 Catalogue, some new products, pictures in
the Heroes File as well as the odd usual and unusual ‘very interesting
picture’. We specialise in line breeding select species and the breeding of quality hybrids in the field of Dendrobium, and from the Sarcanthinae Group. We are always on the lookout for 'other' quality goodies from home and overseas to offer to you our customer, this year is certainly no exception. You will see in the Other Select Species & Hybrids tab. 2008,
was to say the least, crazy, both
with the weather, and Brian’s Arthur –it- is, prescribed medications (FOR
THE Arthritis) , as well as other remedies,
have helped marginally. As you will see the new crosses aren’t as
abundant as in previous catalogues, so we hope you understand the circumstances.
In spite of both we have flowered quite a number of ‘goodies’ from OUR
breeding, and have received numerous positive comments regarding the quality of
our plants, blooms. It does confirm to us that we have a lot of very happy
Aussie Native Orchid growers. Go to the Results
tab, & you will see our success stories. They are briefly....the Spring Show
in The Wetlands at Sandgate, an OPEN Show had Den Xgracillimum ‘GRANDFORM’
receive the Grand Champ & Dockrillia OLIVER JACK ‘OLIVIER TOO’ had the
Rnchs Aussie Passion
‘Kidman’ the
Central Coast A.N.O.S Spring Show’. Finally at the Newcastle Group Sarcochilus
Show Rnchs. AUSSIE PASSION ‘KIDMAN’ was again judged CHAMPION
HYBRID whilst Dockrillia sp. aff.
flagella ‘TUMBI’ received CHAMPION EPIPHYTIC SPECIES and also was judged
to be CHAMPION AUSTRALASIAN ORCHID AND FINALLY Dockrillia sp. aff.
flagella 'TUMBI' the GRAND
CHAMPION.
Dockrillia sp.
aff. flagella ‘TUMBI’
Furthermore
we were advised by our very good friend Dick Doran in New Jersey that Dockrillia
Grey Ghost ‘Tumbi’ HCC/AOC-ANOS received an 82 point AM/AOS at a February
Show with just 15 beautiful blooms, At
the Longwood
Gardens International Orchid Show New York he benched
Dockrillia Oliver Jack ‘Gerard’, he was awarded a
CCM 86 Points AOS, the award read, “approx, 330 flowers and 24 buds”,
and he advised us that he had lost at least 100 blooms in transit.
The
sarcochilus species/hybrids haven’t
had a good year, flowering was substandard of which you may or may not be aware,
it takes around 6 – 9 months for a sarcochilus pod to mature, as against the
Dendrobiums from 8 weeks to 16 weeks, & the success of viable seed is about
60% - 70% less than dendrobiums, if you are lucky, As you will see we haven’t
had the best of years in the breeding department, both as a result of the crazy
climate and Brian’s malady. It hasn’t been an easy year for the seedlings
either with the dramatic weather changes we all experienced in spring, summer
and Winter, the lack of rain has not
been a help. You will see that we
have had success with several unique crosses of our Dockrillias that we feel
have potential plus. We flowered several Dendrobium hybrids with speciosum
curvicaule as Dads and the results have been very pleasing. Ted Walmsley, the
Kempsey Legend was once again impressed, when shown several of these crosses at
his Speciosum Weekend. If you
haven’t been to it, you should place it on your calendar. We flowered another
of the spec. Herbstar (spec. ped.
Herberton x spec. curv. North Star),
which we’ve called ‘Trifid’s Twin’, huge flower, thick segments, good
colour & shape. Our
quality plants were presented at a number of shows, for those who had the
pleasure of seeing them there and the success they received, you were fortunate.
Some of the hybrids we benched this past year have some new and interesting
parents; some used for the first time. Those
who receive a hard copy of our catalogue will see we have weakened a little in
giving some colour on the front page. You will also note the lesser number of
crosses as explained previously. What
flasks we do have will be made available at SHOWS ONLY, so be an early bird at
the events we are participating in for 2009, the events are listed in our Events
Tab.
