This variety of dendrobium is no more difficult to grow than our Tropicools™, both with an equally high tolerance of cold weather.
The main difference between this and the Tropicool™ varieties being the absence of Tropical breeding influence in D. bigibbum.
Some of the background parents contributing to this line that produce some extremely flamboyant coloured and perfumed blooms are speciosum, tetragonum, kingianum, fleckeri, gracilicaule, falcorostrum and jonesii.
Unlike the Tropicools™, Dendrobium hybrids usually only flower on the mature growths, so although it takes longer before these flowers can be seen, it is usually worth the wait. On mature plants there can be three or four spikes on a growth, with the usual flowering period starting as early as June and continuing through to September. Flower life isn't as long as the Tropicools™ but well worth having in your collection.
We have 6 new Dockrillia’s and an Australian Ginger remake using Dock. striolata ‘Phena’s Ruffles’, especially the 2669 and 2719 we feel have a lot of potential. Plus using Dock. Tweetie ‘Huge’ as a Mum with the rather flamboyant Dock. fasciculatum, could be another Maxwell Smart job.
We do have very few Yondi Tina “Goliath’ FCC/AOC-ANOS, Avril’s Gold ‘Copperpot’ Mericlones and D. Avril’s Gold remakes to tempt you.
